Crime is a pervasive issue that affects everyone in South Africa, and the community of Vosloorus Marimba Gardens Ext 9 decided to take action. Last year in May 2023, we established the Marimba Gardens Neighbourhood Watch Patrollers (MGNWP) group with a clear mission: to combat crime and substance abuse in our community.
1. About Marimba Neighbourhood Watch
The MGNWP was formed with the primary goal of creating a safer environment for everyone in Marimba Gardens. Our group has grown steadily since its inception, placing a strong emphasis on youth leadership and community involvement. In a recent article by local journalist Zaid Khumalo from Kathorus Mail, our journey and efforts were highlighted, showcasing the impact we've had in just over a year. However, while community efforts are crucial, the private sector also needs to play a significant role in addressing the crime pandemic in our society. Businesses and corporations can contribute by funding community safety initiatives, supporting job creation programs, and providing resources for crime prevention measures. By partnering with local communities and law enforcement, the private sector can help build a more secure and prosperous environment for everyone.
2. Community Police Forum (CPF)
The Community Police Forum (CPF) is a recognized structure with a national office, playing a crucial role in bridging the gap between the community and the police. Established in 1990, CPFs were created to build trust and ensure an effective response to crime in all communities across South Africa. However, one of the biggest challenges is that many community members do not know how to participate or interact with CPF as an effective vehicle for enhancing local safety.
"There has been a major shift towards increasing community participation in fighting crime through various forms such as patrol groups and neighborhood watches" said David Bruce. CPFs are essential in this effort, providing a structured way for residents to collaborate with law enforcement. By educating the community on how to engage with CPFs, we can enhance our collective response to crime and build stronger, safer neighborhoods.
3. South African Crime
"In South Africa, no single group has a monopoly on crime" said by Jakkie Cilliers. Crime is caused by various factors and manifests differently across communities. In my experience with the MGNWP, two major problems stand out: the lack of firearm control and instances of police involvement in criminal activities.
Firearm control is a significant issue, as illegal guns contribute to the high crime rates and pose a constant threat to community safety. Additionally, corruption within the police force can undermine efforts to combat crime, as some officers may be involved in illegal activities themselves. These challenges make it even more crucial for community-based initiatives like MGNWP to operate effectively and build trust among residents.
In conclusion, the MGNWP is more than just a crime-fighting unit; it’s a testament to what a united community can achieve. By working together and fostering relationships with established structures like the CPF, we can address the root causes of crime and create a safer environment for all. As we look to the future, our goals remain clear: to enhance safety, provide opportunities for our youth, and build lasting partnerships with law enforcement. Together, we are transforming neighborhood safety, one patrol at a time.
