While browsing my Netflix account in search of a series that could provide me with inspiration, comedy, and education all in one, I stumbled upon "The Bold Type." Intrigued by its premise, I decided to give the first season a try. Little did I know that it would turn into an addictive binge-watch lasting five seasons. Set in the vibrant backdrop of New York City, the show follows the lives of three remarkable young women—Jane Sloan, Kat Edison, and Sutton Brady—as they navigate their careers at the fictional fashion magazine, Scarlet. What sets this series apart is its unflinching exploration of real societal issues.

One standout theme from "The Bold Type" is the undeniable importance of the human touch—a fact that remains irreplaceable even in the age of artificial intelligence. Despite the rise of technology, the human workforce will always play a pivotal role, as only humans possess the unique ability to authentically connect with one another. In this article, I will delve into the top four valuable lessons we can glean from this captivating series.

1. Embrace risk

Embracing risk is essential, even when playing it safe seems tempting. A prime example is Jane's decision to leave Scarlet for what she believes is a better opportunity at Incite. However, the move turns out to be a wrong fit, resulting in her termination. Through her journey of freelance writing and self-discovery, she returns to Scarlet as a more mature and media-savvy professional. This experience teaches us the value of taking risks and learning from failure.

2. The Future is Digital

"The Bold Type" showcases Scarlet magazine's transition from print to a fully digital platform. This shift compels the team to adapt and reinvent their approach. Recognizing the power of social media and understanding the target audience becomes crucial. Going digital means strategically positioning the brand, providing value, and reaching a wider audience. Whether through social networks, blogs, or other digital platforms, embracing the digital landscape is fundamental in today's world.

3. Networking is key

The series emphasizes the significance of building a strong network of professional relationships. "The Bold Type" illustrates the importance of networking not only with peers but also with influential individuals within the company and industry. Our network is a valuable asset, as it can help us in times of crisis and present new opportunities.

4. Enhance the hiring process

A progressive hiring process is essential. The show highlights the problematic recruitment process of Scarlet Magazine's parent company when Kat must assemble a new social media team. The resumes all appear similar, emphasizing Ivy League education, outstanding scores, and impressive internships. However, Kat recognizes the need for a fresh voice and challenges the company's policy. This move acknowledges that qualifications extend beyond traditional standards and that highly skilled candidates can be found outside conventional talent clusters. It encourages a more inclusive approach to hiring, valuing skills acquired through real-world experience and online learning.

"The Bold Type" is a thought-provoking show that sparks important conversations. Its portrayal of a supportive and inclusive workplace, filled with friendships and fun, makes it a binge-worthy series. The lessons learned from the characters' experiences—embracing risk, adapting to the digital future, nurturing professional networks, and enhancing the hiring process—resonate with professionals in various fields. By incorporating these lessons into our own lives, we can strive for personal growth and success in the dynamic world of digital marketing.
